Shortly after Kobe Bryant retired, Michael Jordan gifted him with two full sets of 1-30 Air Jordans. A black set and a white set. Kobe auctioned off the black set (the intention from the beginning) to raise money for his charities. A few years later that collection was cleared for display in Vegas, and Keith, Monique and myself got the call to design it.
Since the idea was a “traveling” exhibition, we settled on road cases as the display. Each case holding two pairs, bullet proof lexan glass, custom lighting, and full details about each shoe. I learned everything there was to know about each pair, as I was tasked with the design and all writing!
We were given little info on the location, scale of the space for the display. It was literally in a guarded vault. So we decided to wing it. Flew to Vegas, rented a truck, went to Home Depot and built it on site.
We had to do all the work with the security gate down and security guards. It’s a million dollar collection!
The shoes arrived by armed truck earlly in the morning. We had two days to build, unpack and set up. Only Monique and I handled the shoes with white gloves.
Just the 3 of us! At least we had time to ham it up with the security chains that linked all of the cases together.
